FAQs

What is The Stapleford Park Challenge all about?

Stapleford Park Golf Course is offering anybody who plays the golf course at Stapleford Park in 2008 the opportunity to compete in The Stapleford Park Challenge.

Unlike most golf competitions the initial phase of the tournament does not have the restriction of demanding that individuals take part in an event on a certain day.

1. How do I take part in The Stapleford Park Challenge 2008?

To take part in the Stapleford Park Challenge 'main leagues' you must play at least three rounds of golf at Stapleford Park Golf Course between the months of April 2008 and October 2008.

You must register online and log your scores via this website. Your scores must be validated by someone at the Stapleford Park Pro Shop to qualify for the Stapleford Park Challenge Final and you will be asked to produce your valid scorecards for the Stapleford Park Challenge Final.

2. I am not a member of Stapleford Park GC. Will I be competing against members?

The Stapleford Park Challenge has three leagues:

  1. The Stapleford Park Challenge Members League
  2. The Stapleford Park Challenge Non Members League
  3. The Stapleford Park Challenge Fun League

During the League season, Stapleford Park Members will compete in their own League. Non members with handicaps will play in the non members league and non members with no handicaps will play in the Fun League. Players who qualify from the 'main leagues' or who are selected from the fun league will take part in the Stapleford Park Challenge in October.

3. Do I need to be a member of a Golf Club to take part?

No, this competition is open to everyone whether they have a valid handicap or not.  However, the Stapleford Park Challenge Members and Non-Members Leagues will only be open to those who have a valid handicap certificate.

  1. The Stapleford Park Challenge Members League

You must be a signed-up member of Stapleford Park Golf Club to take part in this League.

Each time you enter a score in the League you will be asked to enter your current valid handicap.

      2.    The Stapleford Park Challenge Non Members League

You must have one of the following valid handicap certificates to take part in this League:

  • A CONGU or LGU handicap
  • An EGU Associate Membership Handicap

Each time you enter a score in the League you will be asked to enter your current valid handicap.

      3.    The Stapleford Park Challenge Fun League

You are not required to have a handicap certificate for this League.  The League will issue you with a fun handicap.  Your handicap will then be adjusted according to the scores you enter.

Even if you only manage to play one or two rounds at Stapleford Park it is worth entering the Fun League as everyone in the Fun league will be entered into the Fun Draw for a place at the Stapleford Park Challenge Final.

Given this, the following table will determine how your ‘league’ handicap will be amended based on your score.

The maximum handicap for men is 28 and the maximum handicap for ladies is 36.

The table below shows the handicap ranges in each category and the deduction in handicap for each Golf League point scored.

Category 1 Handicap range 0.1 – 5.4 Deduction for each 10 points scored 0.1
Category 2 Handicap range 5.5 – 12.4 Deduction for each 10 points scored 0.2
Category 3 Handicap range 12.5 – 20.4 Deduction for each 10 points scored 0.3
Category 4 Handicap range 20.5 – 28.4 Deduction for each 10 points scored 0.4
Category 5 Handicap range over 28.5 Deduction for each 10 points scored 0.5

Therefore if my handicap is currently 8, and I score 40 league points, my new handicap will be 8 minus 4 x 0.2 equals 7.2.

If I score negative points, a net score above par, my handicap is increased by point 0.1 per round no matter what the score is and no matter what my current handicap is.

4. How are League Points calculated?

All scores must be registered online - no scores will be accepted via e-mail, fax or post unless they have been registered online first.

Stroke Play

For each stroke play score you enter you will be asked to submit the gross score (number of total strokes taken), the SSS/CSS of the course and then for:

  • The Stapleford Park Challenge Members and Non Members Leagues, we will ask you to submit the handicap you played off on that round of golf;
  • The Stapleford Park Challenge Fun League, we will have recorded at registration your League handicap and therefore will use that handicap to finalise your League points.

The following calculation is then made to work out your Golf League points.

Gross strokes minus handicap = net score.

CSS/SSS minus net score = Golf League points.

For instance, if I score a 76 gross and my handicap is 8, my net score is 68.

If the CSS on the day for the course is 72, I have scored 40 golf league points (4 under par).

Stableford Points

The Stableford points score will calculate the Player's points score.

For example, if they score 40 Stableford points, this is 40-36 = 4 better than their handicap, therefore they earn 40 points.

However, if they score 34 points, this is 34-36 = -2 worse than handicap, therefore they earn –20 points.

5.   How can I get my scores validated?

Scorecards must be validated for those who are on the leaderboard on the Stapleford Members and Non Members Leagues. Scorecards must be stamped by someone at the Stapleford Park Pro Shop.

At the end of the season anyone who has qualified for the Stapleford Park Challenge Final will be required to submit all three qualifing scorecards along with their handicap certificate*. Failure to submit valid scorecards or a valid handicap certificate will result in disqualification.

* Anyone qualifying via the fun league will play with their Fun League Handicap at the Stapleford Park Challenge Final

It is the Player's responsibility to remember to get their scorecard validated.

5.1 What is a validated scorecard?

The Player is required to ensure that his or her scorecards are signed by the Player, his or her playing partner and by the Stapleford Park Golf Professional or representative with their name and date clearly stated.

6. How do I qualify from the League Tables to The Stapleford Park Challenge Final

A Player must submit a minimum of three qualifying scores for their League position to count towards the end of Season Challenge Final and therefore ultimately the Grand Final.

There are three leagues in the Stapleford Park Challenge:

   1. The Stapleford Park Challenge Members League

   2. The Stapleford Park Challenge Non Members League

   3. The Stapleford Park Challenge Fun League

The top 10 players from the Members League, 20 players from the Non Members league and 4 lucky draw winners from the Fun League will play in the Challenge Final at Stapleford Park in October.

For all scores submitted, a Player’s points score is automatically calculated and added to their list of points. The league table calculates each Player’s three overall best point scores which forms their total Golf League points and therefore determines their position.

7. How do I increase my points?

In order for their total Golf League points to increase, players need to submit a score better than one of their three previous best scores. For example, if a Player’s best scores so far are 40,40,10 making a total 90 points, if that Player then scores 40 points, his points total increases to 120 (40, 40, 40). If they score -10 points however, it remains at 90.

8. Should I enter all my scores?

A player should still enter scores that don’t necessarily improve their total Golf League points.  This is because at the end of the Season, anyone still tied on points will have the number of scores entered taken into account to determine who qualifies for the end of season Challenge Final.  If the number of scores entered are also tied, then qualification for the Challenge Final will be determined according to the Player who entered the first score in the Challenge.
